Anyway beware: **spoiler warning**
The story seems simple, Jersey Shore Joseph Gordon-Levitt is addicted to porn which he loves more than actual sex. Then walks in a "ten"--Scarlett Johansonn that hooks him right in, but unfortunately she is a romcom addict and believes in true love. You would think it's a story about her taming and domesticating him. But no... And this is why I think this movie kind of shows Joseph Gordon-Levitt's depth as a writer.
He juxtaposes the two highly attractive, seductive Jersey Catholic Italians, who are flawed in their own ways. Scarlett who seems like the good girl who "waits" to have sex, is actually a manipulating princess who talked him into going back to school, and making him feel bad about him cleaning his own apartment. Joseph obviously has porn addiction and though he thinks he's more committed with Scarlett, he's not. They are basically just fooling each other that they are each others trophy partner to their friends and family whilst getting their own needs be it sex or affection.
The interesting interludes of the movie are the weekly confessions he makes at church and his prayers while he gyms. And then in comes Julianne Moore. A middle aged woman in his night school class who he caught broken down crying once. She saps into his life and changes things completely.
I think the movie has a new concept and was very raw, genuine and convincing. It shows JGL's versatility as an actor, writer and director. Personally I think he did a great job acting, especially one scene towards the end, I don't think everyone his age can do a convincing job like him. He evinced the maturity of a genuine actor with his facial expressions as well as grasping the emotions of his character and bringing it to life.
Writing and directing wise, I felt it was a bit too Jersey Shore for me, maybe that was to create a more commercial success. I would have wanted to see the juxtaposition to be more interesting. And the part with Julianne Moore could have gone more in depth.
At the end of the day, I would definitely recommend this movie, not just because of JGL's signature charm and Scarlett's cleavage if you are a guy, but because of its honesty, and the ending paradox feeling of being lost but clear of what you want. Watch it!!!
