2014 the umbrella movement,
I told kids to go home get an education,
But 2016 was the disappointment,
Bookstore owners gone with no justification.
2019 say what? Extradition?
The people took the streets and told where they stand,
But the government, they didn't understand.
So yea, there was an escalation,
A great confusion.
Lennon walls started appearing round the streets,
Beautiful post-its talking about peace.
But on the night of July the twenty first,
pedestrians cried because triads burst,
attacked the press,
attacked the elderly,
attacked a pregnant woman,
Where was the policemen?
I didn't think this day would come,
but living here feels like being in a prison,
The people are tired,
the people are sad,
but above all the people are mad,
Mad because once upon a time
Some of us defended the governemnt's crimes,
But today we see
very clearly,
Who is right , who is wrong,
While they try to stop us,
We will stay strong,
Seek for justice,
And this will not be the end of any of it.

Crazy Rich Asians movie review *mild spoiler alert*
To say I was anticipating the movie is an underestimation. After reading all three of the delectable books, jumping up high when I heard of the adaptation, announcement of the cast, following Constance Wu's every Instagram move and down to the very last minute of the premiere, I have been waiting and waiting. This not only consolidates the success of Kevin Kwan's genius writing, but is a huge inspiration for Asian writers out there. It is an exciting time to see Asian representation from writing all the way to directing and acting. Anyhow, let's get into it:
Given all the details and subplots in the original book, the movie was well paced. It retained the dramatic opening scene in London, quickly breezed through the news of Nick going back to Singapore and also developed the subplot of Astrid's marriage. I love the humor that was instilled into the movie by Ken and Akwafina.
Some scenes that were not in the movie but still very appropriately dealt with was the majong scene. Though arguable a copycat of "Joy Luck Club" was still appropriate and touching (truth be told I cried). Omg the proposal scene was absolutely different but still very cute.
Let's talk music. My gosh, I loved how they rendered old Shanghai tunes but also mixed it up with a Mandarin version of Coldplay's Yellow- an obvious reference to the ethnographic depiction.
I was not quite happy with how they left Astrid's story the way they did. They spent more time on developing Bernard and Kitty than they could have with Astrid in which I think was an important storyline. I don't even know how they will continue that in the next movie.
But in general I liked the adaptation. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and more importantly, it made me think and reflect on the love God has blessed me with in this life time.

Hong Kong: The Land of Paradoxes
My recent 33rd birthday reflection as well as a recent conversation with my family comparing living in Scandinavian, Australian and Canadian cities allowed me to reorganize my thoughts on the city I now reside in: Hong Kong. How I locate myself on this canvas. What I have found out is that we HK residents live in a land of paradoxes.
Before the handover in 1997, Hong Kong was already one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Now that the city has been forced to open up to it's biological mother China, it has now entered the inevitable stage of being a (what I like to think) rebellious teenager with an identity crisis. For those who want to jump and criticize me for insulting HK residents like that, let me just preempt that I have no intentions of doing so but quite the contrary. Bear with me.
HK residents ever since the 60s and 70s has developed a great work ethic of diligence. Working their supposedly 9-5 job way over time. The abbreviation O.T. (standing for over time) is widely used and understood even by my grandma who knows negligible English. This work ethic was inherited by the next generation of millennials (ahem, moi) the only difference is that we are the living, breathing anthem of "Work hard, play hard." Unlike our parents who never indulged in designer brands, fine dining and traveling to save money for an apartment, we millennials are lucky enough to have a family that is in no dire financial abyss and hence can live life a bit more than the last generation. HK residents literally coined the Cantonese short hand for the weekend routine of "shop, movie, dine". In recent years, some has dove into the alternative of wellness, spending time at the gym, doing yoga, hiking or cycling.
And here is my first observed paradox: HK residents would gladly give into a job they most probably loath and grind at for most of the week, and then at the end of the week, do an absolute 180 and just let loose. What is the meaning of life for the many bankers and office workers who either hate their tedious jobs or the ethically questionable institution they loath? What is the meaning of life for the many people who is complacent at their government jobs yet spends the holidays protesting against their boss? Why not work in something you feel passionately for most of the week so you do not have to force a weekend of "let's make myself happy"?
The next paradox is derived from that very last question but perhaps a more quantified question: Is the hefty price tag of indulgence that important that we give up our choice of how we make a living?
A parallel paradox is that we work tirelessly for months so that we can go traveling. Why not build a home we do not need to escape from? This question after some thought is the result of the system we unfortunately can't change too much. There are more mainland Chinese flooding into our city whether, some just tourists or some evolving into residents taking up not only space but even resources. And I understand that this frustration is often what drives us to travel. But wouldn't it be nice that we can live in a city, working at a job we love, so we needn't have to escape all the time?
Another paradox comes in the form of health and lifestyle: (and I am by no means an exception from this) we live in a society that salivates on the gluttony of Instagram worthy food yet after that then again take a 180 turn and torture ourselves in the gym. Why not stay disciplined when consuming food in the first place? Why not exercise because we enjoy it, not to detox?
Last paradox: we spend so much time at work multi-tasking, when we don't we need apps to remind us to breathe, to stand up and walk around, drink, to do basic things we used to do on our own. Our minds are so preoccupied that we need time to meditate and unwind from that. And sometimes we aren't even good at doing that.
What I have come to conclude (at least for me) is that life is a gift of constantly being in the present. If I wake up everyday knowing I love the work that I do, that I enjoy nurturing the next generation about literature, that I feel a humbling sense of work flow when I write, I do not have to force a weekend of "make up for the fives days I just spent in hell" nor do I have to escape when I travel around the world. That my traveling is instead wanderlust driven.

A United Kingdom movie review
I was
looking forward to the showing of this movie ever since it came out but didn’t
quite get the chance to see it. I was hence very delighted to see that it was
one of the in-flight movies on my flight to Canada. I did not hesitate one
minute to start the movie in fact it was the first one I chose and it sure did
not disappoint.
The movie
was not just about interracial marriage in the age of the apartheid but was
also about a king who had to disobey his reagent uncle, possibly go against his
people to attain what he thinks is right and just. It is also about a working
class woman who in the name of love decided to defy her parents, especially her
father, leave her parents and sister behind and readjust her whole life in a
country and continent she barely knows much about.
As the story
unfolds, it is found that not only was the king dragged out of his country to
negotiate the status of it only to find he was “deemed unsuitable” to be king
but also exiled from his home. Whilst he fights this exile he was promised by
soon-to-be Prime Minister Churchill to be reunited. That promise was however
broken upon Churchill’s inauguration.
Amidst this
chaos, it is also found that the queen is pregnant with a mixed racial baby.
While she fights her “fellow English women” to go to South Africa to “seek
medical help” (translate: abortion) she and her once estranged sister-in-law
bond over womanhood and family. The queen soon after childbirth joins the tribe’s
women to build the community and fight her husband’s political battle while
they suffer a long distance marriage.
I will leave
no spoilers as to how the story ends, but I can promise you it was poetic and
triumphant to the very end. I was dabbing my teary eyes scene after scene as
they move from one obstacle to one victory. The speeches in the screenplay were
eloquently written, the beauty of the country transcended by cinematography
success, acting was not only convincing but inspirational and the original
score moved every inch of my heart. An absolute 5 star film manic experience I
highly recommend.

New Lyrics for Little Mermaid's Part of Your World
Me performing on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8alRnRWYI0A
Look at this stuff,
Isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my life is complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl, the girl who has, everything?
I think that I am a good teacher,
I have family friends and boyfriend,
You want some manuscripts?
I got three of'em
But who cares?
No big deal,
I want more...
I want to be real writer,
I want to see my name on a book,
shelfed next to Shakespeare
or Kevin Kwan
that would be neat...
Don't get me wrong,
I am proud to have
three manuscripts sittin on my laptop,
mocking at me saying
"What are you doing?"
I do not know...
One day I'll be,
Courageous and free,
I'll send them out for people to read,
One day I'll be,
Telling stories...
Published and heard...
What would I pay
to spend my days
writing away
What would I pay
to play with words and tell stories
Betcha I'd slay after a day
cause I tell it like I see it
Bright young woman,
Sick of hiding,
ready to send...
And ready to go where the authors go,
ready to edit till past midnight
pushing the limits of narratives
and how they're told
One day I'll be,
Courageous and free,
I'll send them out for people to read,
One day I'll be,
Telling stories...
Published and heard...

Can't be ordinary? Be extraordinary!
So as cliche as this may sound "Yea yea, new years resolutions", but it's more of a short-term or actually long term goal for myself is to not deliberately look for love. So deleting all online dating apps, the good ones and the bad ones. All deliberate technology is already gone. And as far as mentality wise, I have quite well adjusted to the fact that, if it will happen, it will happen. If not, why push or waste time to? And now you might be asking, why is she making a fuss about this? Well here's why...
To change such deeply engraved mentality, I needed something robust to remind me every waking second of my life of this resolution. So I made the motto. A motto that I have tried to imprint into my conscious mind: If I can't be ordinary, then Be Extraordinary! If I can't get married and have a family like I hoped for since I was a 4, then I'll thrive as much as I humanly can to be extraordinary, to build the career that I have always wanted and possibly haven't achieved yet because of the time I have wasted dating terrible men one after another.
They say you will only be good at what you are doing if you're addicted to it. Just like the two main characters one of the greatest blockbusters of the year Whiplash. Excellence comes with addiction. And that's not supposed to be a problem because I love the literary world. I love reading and writing. All I need now is to win that plaque that says I'm good at it. And I'm not talking about graduating from my masters and getting back into public school teaching, not even IB, not even lecturing, I won't stop there. Because I need to, because I crave for it, because I'm addicted...I will finish the half finished novel I wrote. I will write and write till it's right; edit, edit, edit until it's immaculate. And I will use the same dedication I had to get into grad school and finish it, to get a literary agent, and then get myself published. That is what I wanted since I was 14. And I will do it before I turn 34. Mark. My. Word. If my goal was to be a mom of two by 34, well honey that goal is out of the window, deep in the sea, making it's own millions of fish babies. Cause right now, there's a bigger fish to catch. "Plenty Of Fish" in the sea? I'm sick and tired of swimming around looking for a good fish. Neither do I want any fish. I want this fish! My Moby Dick!

People always say they want passion. They want a passionate relationship. Well how about be passionate about your life goals too, if not more?
I recently met Victoria Stacey in one of my University of Waterloo classes, on our first day of class we sat together and when asked to be paired together for the whole semester for assignments, Victoria turned without hesitant to this little stranger who's new here and didn't know what "Rhetoric of Digital Design" meant, and asked if I would like to be her partner. Already I felt her decisive and dedicated personality. As we started working on our assignments, even though there were times we hit a road block, in the end were able to overcome the seemingly treacherous obstacles. How did we do that? I can't say for Stacey but her passion to overcome obstacles influenced me to work alongside with her. Her dedication to her co-op work has also inspired me to be passionate about what I love. Just as she loves photography, story-telling, and creative craftsmanship. Towards the end of our course and a successful exhibition of our work, I even learnt that she is the Founder and Editor in Chief of the magazine Passion8. Without turning over the pages, the magazine's title already captivated me. Skimming through it and hearing her enthusiasm about it led me immediately to ask "Can I be a contributor?" and again, with the same dose of decisiveness she had when I met her she said "Yea, sure. Just send it to me ..." and she mentioned a deadline for her intended next edition.
So hear I am writing not only a blog for my site, doing something I am passionate about and writing about it, but I also want to highly endorse the pathos as well as the professional work of Victoria and her team. And well of course the obvious agenda: writing in the hopes I can contribute to this great initiative, Passion8.

Modern day Mercutio
As I jokingly called my friend Romeo, he said he'd rather be Mercutio, cooler, which come to think of it yea so intuitive about life and death yet also so fearless and sticks up for Romeo. I mean I would wana be his gf, even if i knew he would die. And then i'll roofie and seduce Tybalt and scar his face to teach him a lesson of what is genuine honor in revenge. Then i'll runaway on a bike Midsummer nights dreams style haha. Just a thought.

Frozen movie review and an extension to Life
I literally just saw the Walt Disney blockbuster of the holiday season Frozen and trying to articulate how I feel about it before those emotions are blown away...spoiler alert though (sorry, I have to put things into context)
I saw the trailer and Kristen Bell's interview about it and has been anticipating it ever since...not just because I'm a sucker for Disney movies but also because of the unconventional storyboard of a girl fearing about her "monstrous" powers, concealing it and alienating herself, even and especially from the little sister she loves dearly, which tormented the both of them.
Another turmoiling moment for me was when Elsa was emancipated from the city and was able to feel her true self, knowing she can't go back...back to her home...to being with her people...that she will have to be alone for the sake of everyone...yet in a way it set her free...
Anna is another intriguing character who first spontaneously fell in love and then courageously ran after her sister, with full faith she won't harm her and taking full responsibility of the city's fate.
There's also the disguise of love, the definition of love, realizing your abilities as well as trusting other people's abilities, and above all having your siblings back. A true gem I recommend to people of all ages, because either your children will love the two princesses and all the catchy songs that you will also fall in love with, or you will burst your tears from laughing at good old Olaf!
This movie also made me reflect on my own life (as of most movies do) and made me question myself: have I lost my ability to write and love or is it just fear? and how am I gonna really emancipate myself from those fears? I already have a great support system of family and friends, what more could I ask for?
But on this eve of Christmas, I just wish to thank the Lord for everything and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!!!=)

Islamic teachers
I was having dinner at a Turkish place for a friends birthday and got into an interesting conversation with the owners about Islamic views of teachers.
Back home they view teachers as holy people, they are astonished at how some little brats in Hong Kong can scold teachers or treat them with limited respect. They said there is a saying in Islamic that "If a teacher can teach me one alphabet, I should be his slave for 40 years." Although this is of course an intended exaggeration but the moral of it is pretty clear: we should respect our teachers. The most interesting part of the conversation is that one guy said, despite one of his elementary school teacher being ridiculously strict and used a ruler to hit their hands when they did something wrong, he is still very thankful for him up to this day for that teacher to help him become the man he is today. Even now, whenever he goes back to Turkey, he will visit this teacher and have tea with him.
Its interesting getting to know a different culture. Thought i'd share that =)

I wouldn't have it any other way
I think I have accepted the fact that relationships and families are not destined for everyone and it is not destined for me. And I'm fine with that... I have so many friends who fall in love, get married and start families of their own and I am glad to have the privilege to be a part of that and live the life I always wanted to have vicariously through them...and for me that's enough. And in my career I touch upon the lives of some of our next generation, and I cherish that bond I have every step of the way...
I've always had a sense of the kind of guy I'd fall for when I grow up ever since I was little girl... someone cute on the outside and cute on the inside as well... But life often perplexes you and conditions you to believe that that is a fairy tale breed of men, and conditions you that what's on the inside doesn't count, there is no such kind of man... You can choose to have a cute and shallow man, or you can choose to be with a not so cute and shallow man. And when that one guy turns up and proves you wrong, that such "fairy tale" breed exists, but in the end doesn't reciprocate your sentiments...the only thought you end up with is that you'd rather end up growing old alone than going back to the so-called reality of men...
Someone wise once said "It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." And it's true... I wouldn't have it any other way, to not know the existence of such breed and settle for the guy around the corner just for the sake of it... I would't want that at all...

My parish
Often people ask me why I choose to go to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church I go to, despite the fact that the English mass is populated mostly of Filipinas they think I can't relate to. I usually just simply answer "church is church, shouldn't make a difference."
What i never elaborate is that they being Filipina doesn't mean we can't connect, in fact because we have them as helpers in our lives makes the connection stronger, the gratitude and care different to any one else. And their singing is amazing, angelically amazing. I keep thinking that they are angels sent to us not only to help us in our daily lives, but spiritually enrich us with their hymns.
Despite the gun incident and especially because of the typhoon, the Sino-Filo community has actually become more robust.
Another important reason I am with this parish is because my parents were married in this church, I was baptized and confirmed there, even my grandparents memorial happened there, there's simply no reason to diverge.
The strength, serenity and wisdom I always pray for most probably (granted subtly) is from that church in the most inextricable way. I definately wouldn't have done it any way other!

The Age of "Following"
Its 2013 and we are amdist the age of "following" people on twitter, instagram, facebook, following fashion trends, pop culture, following the stock market, the latest gadgets. We follow.
There was a time when we followed our beliefs, followed our faith, followed our hearts. There was a time when following was filtered with "thinking" and wasnt as convenient as clicking an icon or using your dollar signs. There was a time when we said we follow something, it had a meaning and that actions say more than words, more than clicks.
There was a time...

Winning solo sports or winning in life in general
On the eve of my schools swimming gala and after a very relaxing yoga class, i thought I would be in the perfect mind set to talk about this topic.
The biggest gift i attained this year is not the fact that i have been swimming more, running more, cycling more, not the fact that i have been taking up various dance classes again and joined pure yoga (btw i kinda hate physical fitness), not the fact that i grew a year older and got a new job (gees now i sound like a bragger) but they all taught me the same and very important lesson, the greatest gift and realization is that comparing with the person next to you isn't gonna get you anywhere, so stop comparing!!!
Its the rule every sprint or swim coach will tell you but the easiest to forget. People will tell you not to compare yourself with other peoples' lives but you would never listen. And when you keep comparing and stray from focusing on your own sport or life goals, in the end you will not be your best self and instead pathetically comparing yourself with people that shouldn't matter like the guy in the park who flew a lightyear past you or the girl in the front of that dance class. Its not just that fraction of a second that you look into the next swimming lane but your whole mentality of what defines "winning" pulls you down. Its like losing your balance in yoga. Does it really have to be the person with a metal or trophy who has to be the winner? Or did you achieve a personal best time? Does it have to be the person who makes the most money or lives in the biggest house have to be the winner? When keep chasing the dollar sign and don't focus on what you do best...you are already the biggest loser. And in the end the wrong people become scientists or the wrong people become teachers, with a lack of legitimate justification...and that sadly leads to an unbalanced society.
Becoming a special needs teacher has anchored that epiphany for me, not only in the sense that people with learning difficulties can be their own winners as they progress, but even the moderately bright kids shouldn't give themselves a hard time. God made us differently for a reason. But their is one thing that is for sure--EVERYONE has a talent! Once you find it, do yourself and everyone else a favor and hold onto it! Its gold!!!
And don't just hold on to it, but apply it in a team spirit!!! That's what relays are meant for, thats why there are dance crews or debate teams. Thats how companies and nations are founded. So do us all a favor and FOCUS on yourself but in the midst of it don't forget you are in a team, a society, or simply...a family!!! You are a SOCIAL human being!!!
C'est la vie!!! Et bon appetit!!!

Philippines and Rio De Janero
So I was reading the Sunday Examiner about the Manila incident as well as their deteriorating ecosystem; and the Rio delegation. I then had two goals one short term and one long term in mind:
- Plan on going to the Philippines in November during Chung Yeung Festival to understand how the Philos think about the incident, what the Philo as well as HK government and citizens should do to harmonize the situation. As well as going to check out the ecosystem and how we can prevent another touch wood tsunami from happening. The sad part is everyone worries about me going, because it's the Philippines and there will be no insurance cover hence no one is going to chaperon me and hence I once again feel that I am confined by the so-called love and institutions, and bounded to bi- by-bit make this world a better place. My parents can laugh at the nowadays "helicopter parents" but what about themselves? Since when was being adventurous a crime? Since when was taking risks and following my heart the wrong thing to do? And when will they let go of this 28-year-old? Recently I heard someone say, "parents give everything they can to their children, except who they want to be" As a daughter and teacher I find that highly ironic and perplexing. Somehow confusing as well. Anyhow my next relatively long term goal is:
- Sign up to samba dance perform at the Rio De Janero either opening or closing, or even anything trivial just to learn the Rio culture and Portuguese language in a fun playful and of course memorable way. Unfortunately signups are not opened yet but I have signed up for the newsletter!=)
Despite everything I thank God everyday I'm still alive and walking this park of life. Right now all I can do is blog, vlog, teach and love myself. I am still learning to love myself more but its hard when there are so many different people giving their different opinion and philosophies, while i wanna respect and hear what they say, all I really need now is some alone time, or well something that right now I don't have but let's fingers crossed I will have... whom is a man that is not just a friends-with-benefits, not just a soul mate but both... love takes time...

Engaged
We were in a tent waiting for dawn to fall on us, and when the sunrised, he serendaded me with a song he wrote, and said a brief speech that made me teary eyed, pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him...
I wish...
When ever people say "engage" they automatically think of a pretty diamond ring and a beautiful bouquet of flowers and the promise to a wedding and marriage. Think about the ordeal of planning the perfect wedding, whether it be an elaborate event-of-the-year or an intimate get-together. How many think of the deeper semantics of the word "engage"?
"Engage", as I interpret, is a commitment and devotion to something. Engage in a the love of your spouse, your family, your friends, engage in a meaningful career, volunteer work, soul searching, engage in a healthy lifestyle, in arts, engage in the pursuit of scientific or medical discoveries. Be committed and devoted to the things you love and are meaningful to you, and cherish it as if your life depends on it.
When you are engaged in a fulfilling life, it doesn't really matter if you have that diamond ring. Sharing a tent with a soul mate watching the sunrise can still be accompanied with pretty wildflowers and joy. Add in nice music, good food and a nice conversation and voila! Carpe diem!!! The love and joy of life!!
Let's get Engaged!!!

Prerogative?
People often ask me why I need to work out or eat right despite the fact that I am paper thin. Being thin doesn't mean I have the prerogative to be unhealthy, to not exercise, to eat the wrong things. It's like if you are smart, does it give you the prerogative to shirk? To be complacent? To fall below your full potential? The age-old Aesop fable The Tortoise and the Hare perfectly illustrates this. Traits like being thin, or smart of fast, just gives you a head start, in the end, it's really up to you to maintain your performance and make it in the world. Never be jealous of someone who has a certain kind of trait or head start because God is fair, there are probably traits you have that they want as well. The beauty of life is the challenge and pursuit of what we want. If everything is handed out to you, life would be dull and uninteresting. So be tenacious!! Love life's challenges!! And be grateful for what you have!!=)

Your body belongs to...
There is a Chinese saying that "Your body belongs to your parents, and therefore you must not ruin it" ( 身體髮膚受諸父母, 不可以毀傷). Of course I concur but I would like to add a spin-off to it: Your body also belongs to your children as well. Because how you maintain your body will affect the genes of your children. If you have bad choices like excessive drinking, smoking, doing drugs, that will affect your children. If you choose to eat unhealthily or not exercise, your children will have a bigger chance of being obese. Making healthy habits isn't just about yourself or your parents, it's about your future generations and the legacy you choose to leave behind. Be healthy!=)

Paying your way to your kids education?
It was only a while ago English Schools Foundation (ESF), organizer of 19 international schools in HK announced that they will be raising the tuition fees again, and today local elite school Saint Stephen's Girls' College (SSGC) announced that they plan to switch to direct subsidy.ESF is making the increment because the government is phasing out the subvention to support them and they wish to maintain the quality education provided. While SSGC justifies their change as a way to preserve their heritage and ethos.
The question I would like to pose here is: Why has, does and will our education system support the seclusion of poor diligent students to allow rich brats to a better education and easier route to success? If we are to leverage HK's education system to international standards, we should start thinking about questions like this. Which raises the ancient question of why students are allocated into schools based on where they live (how well-off they are). There is on average only 18% of local high school graduates(from elite schools) that are accepted into a local subsidized university. Are the remaining 82% not as hardworking as the elite or international school kids who are ensured of a quality tertiary education? Most definitely not. But it is the flawed system that dooms the future of the 88% remainders. And now they are saying the price tag of this shortcut to success is even heftier? That the fairy tale of pursuing one's dream and passion is even more treacherous? That says a lot about the so-called educators at ESF and SSGC as well as the government. But then again why wouldn't they? They are preserving their own breed.
In all fairness, not all elite or international school kids are brats, I have met aplenty that are not. But would I say the majority is brattier the remaining kids? Probably yes. Is it the kids fault? Definitely not. Is it the system's fault? I would say yes. How then could we rectify this? Well, I have at least done my part of reiterating this age old problem. The rest is really up to the people at the top to have a conscience.
And as teachers and parents, we should educate our kids to never stop dreaming and to fight the system, because I have seen cases, of the less privileged making their way in the world, because they have the perserverance and faith it takes.
