How my brain functions with Chinese literature

So tonight I was having a debatable conversation with my family which led them once again to say im a softie, and in all defense i just blurted out "寧天下人負我, 莫我負天下人" which no one actually challenged the quote itself and trust me my moms Chinese lit is better than me. And when i got home and tried to google where i learnt that from... I was very surprised how i actually got it all wrong...the quote actually is the opposite..."寧我負天下人, 莫天下人負我" which kinda perplexes me...why is that even a famous quote when it sounds like a pompous narcissistic son of a bitch? And how did that translate into something sooo different into my mind??? How?! Im still puzzled...
