Teaching Japanese kids

So I kick started the school year with my PT ESF job at Renaissance College, which was absolutely what i needed right now...kids who are still blossoming and exploring the world as it goes. Right now i've heard a flooding amount of adult philosophies, this was a fresh recess from it.

The lesson was fun, i did some icebreaking with them which allowed me to know what they like, show their personalities and let me build rapport and  scaffold their learning. I skimmed through some of the boring generic stuff and dived into the fun poetry part, as well as giving them abundant time to design their assignment of the day and prepare for a short presentation. I also took time with the individual student-and-teacher discussion evaluation (Thank God i have a small class)

But the most interesting part was teaching the two Japanese girls who knew limited English and were very passive. If you know me, you know I don't like the Japanese government for historical and political reasons, despite the fact that I have a number of Japanese friends who are actually very nice and endearing people. Anyhow, of course they were two very innocent kids lost in translation, so i had to use a whole lot of body language and facial expressions to make sure they understand my Instruction checking questions and Meaning checking questions. Building rapport was hard too coz they are too young to know Hikaru Utada lol but on my way home i already thought of using cartoons next time. And it is true jap kids have difficulties with their "r" sounds but they seem to be in a good progress as i keep correcting. And reiterating them.

Anyhow one day i might go to jap and see how they educate their next generation.

Ciao for now
